Children living away from home

Children live away from home for a variety of reasons and the responsibility for this rests with different people. Where children are living away from home but not with immediate family members, or where children need to be moved from their family home due to abuse, this section sets out how we decide the legal status of a child, what assessments are undertaken and the right support provided if necessary.

There can be many different arrangements in place for children, however the following pages focus on the main scenarios that social workers will have to deal with on a daily basis.

 

It is essential that you understand the legal basis of a child living away from home, so that you can follow the procedures accordingly. There have been a number of cases where Local Authorities haven't supported children properly, even though they were in care.
