Procedure for seeking legal advice

This guidance applies to seeking legal advice in office hours.  There is an 'Out of hours' legal advice service, the procedure for which is dealt with separately.

Wherever possible, it is expected that a practitioner will discuss any legal query with their manager before legal advice is sought.  On occasions this may resolve the query or usefully direct the advice sought.  If id doubt, the Committee is encouraged to err on the side of caution and seek legal advice.  Often legal advice obtained at an early stage can prevent future difficulties.  In very urgent cases, there should be no delay in contacting a lawyer.
